Public research universities solve some of society’s most urgent challenges, but turning ideas into breakthroughs requires fast, secure access to cutting edge technology. In the agentic AI era institutions have an unprecedented opportunity to harness intelligent systems that can process massive datasets, run complex workflows, and dramatically accelerate the pace of scientific discovery.
Today at Gemini at Work, we’re announcing our collaboration with the State University of New York (SUNY) to launch the SUNY AI Platform, a secure AI and high-performance computing environment built on Google Cloud with Gemini Enterprise.
Initially available across nine of SUNY’s most research-intensive campuses, the platform is designed to help researchers move from hypothesis to discovery faster—and to help prepare New York’s students and workforce for an AI-driven economy.
Research with real-world impact
SUNY researchers are tackling challenges with direct impact for communities across New York and beyond. Their work includes improving weather prediction, detecting water quality issues, sequencing DNA for cancer treatments, and processing high-resolution brain scans to aid diagnosis.
To support that work, the SUNY AI Platform empowers researchers of all technical backgrounds to easily access and benefit from Google Cloud’s advanced capabilities—bringing storage, high-powered computing, Gemini Enterprise, and more than 200 trusted AI models together into a seamless, centralized ecosystem. Rather than requiring individual teams and campuses to assemble these capabilities independently, researchers can work within a common foundation that helps simplify data analysis, enable collaboration across institutions, and apply consistent governance and responsible AI practices.
Equipping the SUNY community with AI-ready skills
Technology alone does not create impact; people do.
As part of this collaboration, SUNY is offering system-wide access to Google’s self-paced, industry-recognized AI credentials, available at no cost to students and faculty. Each course can be completed in 5-10 hours and requires no prior experience, helping learners build practical skills to write effective prompts, solve complex problems, and use AI tools responsibly. SUNY is also working to embed Google Career Certificates into academic programs so students can graduate with job-ready technical capabilities alongside their degrees.
Together, the SUNY AI Platform and these learning opportunities reflect a broader approach to AI adoption: pairing access to advanced technology with the skills and institutional capacity needed to put it to work responsibly.
