Removing Downloads from the Dock eliminates its one-click Fan view, but the folder and its files remain on the Mac. Here’s how to restore Fan view on the Downloads folder.

Apple treats Dock items as aliases that point to the originals. Removing a Dock alias changes only the Dock, so putting it back doesn’t recover, move, or duplicate any files.

  1. Open Finder and choose Go, then Home, or press Shift-Command-H.
  2. Drag Downloads to the Dock beside the Trash.
  3. Control-click or right-click Downloads in the Dock.
  4. Choose View Content As, then Fan.
  5. Choose Sort By, then Date Added.
