Apple Reference Image gives iPhone 18 Pro owners verifiable evidence of what the camera captured, offering a new defense against convincing AI-generated and edited images.
Apple Reference ImageThe opt-in feature uses a new sensor in the Main camera that can sign every pixel it sees. Taking a photo in Reference mode captures signed sensor data that Private Cloud Compute turns into an unalterable reference image.
The Photos app displays that reference beside the main photo like a digital negative, allowing viewers to compare the two and determine whether edits were made. Apple’s official release says the feature is designed for photojournalists, photographers, and everyday viewers.
Apple Reference Image first appeared in beta code in August. Apple has now confirmed that APIs in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 will let third-party apps display reference images.
